A common problem with many built up roof systems is inadequate insulation and or ventilation, the latter being the major contributing factor to building envelope failure. These types of roofs, often found on vaulted timber frame roof structures, can lack the properly designed ventilation systems causing excessive interior moisture, ice damning, interior roof moisture weeping/condensation. The general approach is a complete roof tear off, down to the interior drywall or wood cladding. New vapour barrier is applied to the deck before new insulation is laid or sprayed in. If the structural components are assessed to be inadequate, a new structural framing protocol is designed and built from the outside, insulated, sheathed, and strapped for ventilation. Eve and soffit ventilation is designed specifically for the roof square footage as per the the Alberta Building Code.
